WWE World Heavyweight Championship match

The 50 greatest matches in Raw history re-ranked

#50 John Cena, Hulk Hogan & Shawn Michaels vs. Christian, Tomko & Chris Jericho (June 27, 2005)

In a special Six-Man Tag Team Match on the June 27, 2005, episode of Monday Night Raw, three generations united as John Cena lived the dream of many WWE Superstars and fans by teaming up with Hulk Hogan and Shawn Michaels.
In a battle against Christian, Tomko and Chris Jericho, HBK surprised Cena with their partner, The Hulkster. The match stands out as a true milestone in Raw’s history as three of WWE’s biggest Superstars of all time successfully joined forces. Hulk Hogan even paid tribute to Cena after The Hulkster dropped Tomko with a clothesline and performed the Cenation leader’s trademark taunt, “You can’t see me!”

Hogan, Michaels and Cena were victorious and following the contest, Cena and HBK stood in the ring and posed with The Immortal One.

Backstage News on John Cena winning the titles at Money In The Bank

Regarding John Cena possibly winning the WWE World Heavyweight Title on Sunday, the plan as of over a week ago was for Cena to win the title but word today is that the plan may be changed after the Summer Slam poster leaked earlier this week. Apparently even if the finish is switched on Sunday and Cena doesn't win the title just yet, the plan is still for Brock Lesnar vs. champion Cena to headline SummerSlam.

Yo... It's hard to believe that it's been 12+ years since The Franchise did his first rap; with the V-ice hair do but replaced it with a baseball cap; rocking a steel chain and padlock laying the smackdown! On his opponents; The Doctor of Thuganomics hitting with boundary pushing punchlines to inspire memorable momens; Like the time that he stood up to The Pain Lesnar and not caring about getting a beating; Lesnar put him in a wheelchair but still couldn't see him!; Payback's a B... 2012 WWE Extreme Rules; Dawning the phrase "Never Give Up" back in the day it use to be "Ruck Fules"!; Taking over Takers yard to leaving the Rock shook; having great matches with Angle, Booker, Edge and even Phil Brooks; selling out arenas and having everyone getting into the legendary mixed reaction; a polarizing individual who starred in movies, global tv appearances and released a rap album; John Cena...The 14 time WWE/WHC champion and face of the WWE; who studied in the ancient art of Thuganomics becoming the master of "U Can't C Me"; The Wrestler, The Rapper, The Soldier, The modern day Super Hero working with the Make a Wish Foundation; 12 years strong going out there week after week fighting for the Chain Gang and his young Cenation!
Hustle. Loyalty. Respect.

Thank you to those who submitted their entries and made this project successful.

John Cena, U.S. Champion Sheamus & Roman Reigns def. Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt, Cesaro & Alberto Del Rio

Four on three? No problem. For the second time in two weeks, John Cena, Sheamus & Roman Reigns overcame the odds to defeat their Money in the Bank foes, Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt, Cesaro & Alberto Del Rio in a rematch of SmackDown’s furious main event. Looking to avoid a repeat loss, Orton, Del Rio, Cesaro and Wyatt each teed off on Cena and Reigns in the early goings, forcing the 14-time World Champion and former WWE Tag Team Champion to summon Sheamus in order to stave off defeat.

True to form, the U.S. Champion had better luck, rampaging his way through Cesaro with Ten (well, thirteen) Beats of the Bodhrán before Orton interfered and set off a brawl that ended with a Brogue Kick to Cesaro’s chin and a subsequent 1-2-3. The post-match emergence of Kane threw everyone into a frenzy, though, as The Devil’s Favorite Demon laid waste to everyone moments before Triple H reappeared and declared Kane the eighth participant in the Championship Ladder Match. Now these seven Superstars will dance with the demon in the pale moonlight … though if Roman Reigns’ Spear to Kane is any indication, at least one of them is ready for the challenge.

John Cena wins Award

WWE received three Sports Social TV Awards at the second annual Sports Social TV Awards. WWE won awards for "Best Special Event" (Wrestlemania 29), "Best Social Commerce or Marketing Program" (WWE) and "Social TV Sports Entertainer of the Year" (John Cena).

Backstage News on who will win the Titles at Money In the Bank

F4WOnline reports that John Cena is apparently in line to win the WWE World Heavyweight Title at next Sunday's Money In the Bank pay-per-view.

It was previously reported that word from within WWE was that a heel would be leaving Money In the Bank with the title. During Monday's RAW, it appeared they may be grooming Roman Reigns for the title as they had him work his way into the match but that may not be the case as it's likely too soon for Reigns to have a title run.

Tensions mounted between WWE World Heavyweight Title Ladder Match combatants

Poised and ready to compete in the WWE World Heavyweight Champion Ladder Match at WWE Money in the Bank, John Cena kicked off SmackDown – recapping how the unprecedented match came about and asserting that he would reign supreme to become a 15-time World Champion!

Save Bray Wyatt, the Cenation leader’s imminent adversaries (and Paul Heyman) each emerged to dispute his claim and explain why they would be the victorious Superstar in the pay-per-view showdown.

The volatile situation reached a boiling point when Roman Reigns leaped out of the ring to initiate a fierce brawl with Randy Orton. Moments later, Cena and Unites States Champion Sheamus engaged Cesaro and Alberto Del Rio, sending both The Mexican Aristocrat and The King of Swing packing. The intensity generated by this turmoil would only add to the electricity surrounding the 4-on-3 Handicap Match, SmackDown’s scheuled main event.

Sheamus, Roman Reigns and John Cena win 4-on-3 Handicap Match

In an intriguing SmackDown main event, the combatant in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship Ladder Match at Money in the Bank squared off in a 4-on-3 Handicap bout, with United States Champion Sheamus, Roman Reigns and John Cena going head-to-head with Bray Wyatt, Alberto Del Rio, Cesaro and Randy Orton.

In the height of the fierce encounter, Reigns was finally tagged into the powder keg of a contest. This resulted in the “volcanic” Superstar unleashing absolutely aggression on every one of his opponents, before hitting Del Rio with The Spear to give himself, The Celtic Warrior and the leader of the Cenation the victory.

11 Superstars on the matches that changed their lives

John Cena Vs Kurt Angle: Smackdown,June 27 2002

“The match that changed my life was my first match. As the outreach of NXT grows and grows, WWE developmental is changing. A lot of times, NXT Superstars are already recognized by the time they get to WWE. In the days of yore, developmental was just that. You were like a Minor League Baseball player. People might have known of you, but they knew very little about you. Once you made it on TV and had an official debut it was like, ‘ OK,I'm on TV now.The legwork of getting to television is over. The story is now truly beginning.’

“It wasn’t the match itself, or the body of the match, it was the fact that it happened. It’s not that I was more or less accepted backstage. I didn’t have a sense of entitlement, achievement or acceptance. I knew I had a start. And if you look back, it was an improper start, but a start nonetheless. It just didn’t work. The situation I was put in wasn’t the right time. I would soon evolve into something extremely different and go from there. But the most important thing about it was it was a beginning. You can’t have a good story without a beginning.” — JOHN CENA

Wizard World 2014: John Cena wrestles with celebrity and the future

WHENEVER JOHN CENA - "The face of the WWE" and holder of a record number of championships - is determined to do something, he simply does it. Nothing can stop him.

What Cena says he wants to do this weekend is "have fun ordering out a cheesesteak" and then take Wizard Con Philly by storm.

"I have an appearance there from 1 to 2:30 Sunday and then . . . I have a show that night," Cena said. "I'm happy to be able to do it. I'd love to do all day."

Cena says he is "flattered" by those fans who call him a hero and understands why despite a clean-cut image, he is a polarizing figure.

"I'm a very strong individual," he said. "When you have a set of ideals and make them really well-known, people either like them or they don't."

When told he ranks with Hulk Hogan and the Rock as one of the most popular wrestlers ever, Cena remains humble.

"That's pretty important company," Cena said. "I just really love doing what I do and anyone who comes to the Con or the show will be able to see that."

It's hard to imagine that this man who seems to have it all was sleeping in his car when he first arrived in California, but Cena said his journey from then to now has been "fast."

"A lot's happened," he said. "Physically, I'm just getting started. There's plenty left to do. Every day is another opportunity. So it's been a long and great ride."

It's a ride he feared he would continue taking without his 70-year-old father, unless his dad started taking care of himself. So Cena devised a plan for his father to get healthier, starting with diet.

"Once my dad said he was all for it, it was easy," Cena said. "But the initial conversation was tough. But, because my plan is extremely easy, everything worked out . . . and here he is on his 70th birthday, 53 pounds lighter from when he started.

"We were always very close, but that brought us closer."

The day, too, is drawing closer to when Cena will stop wrestling. He says that although he has done a few films, he does not see himself going in the direction of the Rock.

"Oh, no," Cena said. "Dwayne? There's only one Dwayne Johnson. I'd like to be myself, so I'll find a path doing something. I don't know if it's going to be filling his shoes. He's set the bar pretty high."

Former WWE Superstar talks about John Cena:

Former WWE Superstar Brodus Clay recently appeared on the Roman Show. Here's what he said about John Cena.

"He is a pro. He comes to work everyday. He is straight forward and tells you exactly what it is. One of my things was I didn't get to work a match with him. I would have dropped the weight I did and keep the muscle I have. He is a great leader in terms of he talks it; he walks it. He is the face of the WWE and likely so."

"He (Cena) gave us all an opportunity to train and have the same training regiment. The training of the NBA and NFL with Olympic lifts for maintenance, for power, better cardiovascular. He was on the forefront. He gave guys an opportunity."

Money In The Bank Fantasy Bookings and Thoughts

Written by: Ayman Hossam

A MITB Briefcase Ladder Match was added to the card during last night's edition of Main Event.

Thoughts: Great move by WWE which will make the show highly anticipated.

John Cena Visits Brittany Depew:

INDEPENDENCE, Ky. – WWE wrestling superstar John Cena sure knows how to make a dream come true – twice.

While 21-year-old Brittany Depew has been battling terminal cancer, her big wish has been to meet Cena. He already sang “Happy Birthday” to her in a video message, but he bettered that Tuesday when his big motorcoach rolled up her street in Independence.

Cena brought gifts for Depew – including a few more of his ‘Never Give Up” T-shirts that she already wears. But we’re guessing nothing was better than the big hugs he gave her.

Depew recently reached out to Cena on Twitter with a sign saying, “My leukemia is past the stage of being cured.”

Two weeks ago, Cena sent her birthday greetings.

Depew is battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia a third time, according to her Facebook page..

Depew, who has Down syndrome, won homecoming queen at Simon Kenton High School last fall and she recently graduated.

But we’re guessing today’s meeting with Cena is No. 1 on her list.

WWE Money In The Bank 2014 Match for the WWE World Heavyweight Title:

The lineup is now complete, and at WWE Money in the Bank, Roman Reigns, John Cena, Randy Orton, Bray Wyatt, United States Champion Sheamus, Cesaro and Alberto Del Rio will compete in a Ladder Match to decide the next WWE World Heavyweight Champion.
Previous champion Daniel Bryan was stripped of the title on Raw June 9 after it was revealed he would not be medically cleared to compete. Though the decision to vacate the title represented a brutally bitter loss for the popular “Yes!” Man, it also created a huge opportunity for the Superstars who will be vying for WWE’s most prestigious prize on June 29.
While The Viper, Randy Orton, was placed into the contest by The Authority, the remaining six competitors all won qualifying matches to earn their coveted spots. The two latest Superstars to qualify, Reigns and Cena, qualified by winning a Battle Royal and defeating Kane in a Stretcher Match, respectively, on the June 16 edition of Raw.
The finalized field of seven is among the most stacked match lineups in WWE history. Collectively, Cena, Del Rio, Sheamus and Orton boast a remarkable 33 World Championship reigns. None of the three other competitors has ever won a World Title, but Reigns, Wyatt and Cesaro are surely looking to establish themselves as WWE’s premier warrior.
The wielder of the Superman Punch appears intent on getting back at Orton and Triple H for their part in breaking up The Shield, and the sinister sermonizer, Wyatt, seems newly interested in possessing the one accolade that equates to complete power in WWE. Not to be forgotten is The King of Swing, a former U.S. Champion who, backed up by renowned advocate Paul Heyman, just may have the strength, strategy and surgical ring skill to capture the crown.
What will happen when seven of the toughest and most decorated Superstars collide with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship literally hanging in the balance? And what kind of brutality is in store for June 29, when steel ladders are not only completely legal, but the only means of capturing the most important championship in the world?
Find out when history is made and a new WWE World Heavyweight Champions is named at Money in the Bank! Available on WWE Network and on pay-per-view, the huge event takes place Sunday, June 29, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT

Raw Results (16 June 2014):

The Authority addressed the WWE roster

CLEVELAND, OH – For the first time since the great abeyance of 2013, the WWE Universe is without a champion. And with Daniel Bryan’s vacated WWE World Heavyweight Title on the line at Money in the Bank, The Authority took the time on Raw to address their subjects about the future of the supreme prize. The upshot of their address – minus a few zingers thrown in the recovering “B-plus player” Bryan’s direction – was that the final spots in the WWE World Heavyweight Championship Ladder Match would be determined later on Raw. The first, in a Battle Royal that would encompass the entire roster, minus the Superstars that had yet to “evolve” (translation: The rebellious John Cena and the remaining members of The Shield). And the second, in a Stretcher Match – the bout Bryan would have had at Money in the Bank – between Cena and the demon Kane.

The Surprising Gift WWE Superstar John Cena Gave His Father

By: Tim Morehouse (HuffingtonPost.com

Professional wrestling star John Cena Jr. was down, dazed in the ring, as his opponent Randy Orton spotted his dad, John Cena Sr., shouting encouragement to Cena Jr. from his front row seat. To the shock of everyone in the venue and fans watching on TV, Orton hopped out of the ring, grabbed the 60-year-old Cena Sr. from his chair, threw him into the ring, and then proceeded to kick him in the head.

That night, Cena Sr. walked out of the hospital with a bandage on his head and a concussion, but to hear him tell it, getting kicked in the head by Randy Orton was one of the greatest days in his life.

"Busted my eye open, needed six stitches!" Cena Sr. recounts proudly with a smile in his voice. He remembers making a point to go to his job the next day, working for the city, so he could show off his big black eye to his co-workers. "I looked like a panda bear!" he says with glee.
This literal kicked-in-the-head father-son bonding story is only the first of two gifts John Cena Jr. Has given his dad. The second, perhaps more important, was a figurative kick in the hindquarters that may have saved his father's life.
Being in the ring with his son was something John Cena Sr. dreamed about, raising five boys in a suburb of Boston. One of his favorite activities was to bring the boys to watch WWF matches from the cheap seats at the Boston Garden. But it wasn't always easy between the two John Cena's.
"When I was a teenager, I was really abrasive," says Cena Jr. and despite his father's love of professional wrestling, John was more interested in proving himself on the baseball diamond or football field than in the wrestling ring. It's been written that Cena moved to California to become a bodybuilder, but, "Really, I just left to leave," he says. "I needed to get away and as far away as I could."
As far away as he could was Venice, California. Packing up his car with little money and no job, he made a clean break from his life against his father's wishes.
Arriving in California John Cena Jr. began working at a Gold's Gym. Because he couldn't afford an apartment, he slept in his car. Then early in 2000, a wrestler who trained at Gold's encouraged him to take classes at Ultimate Pro Wrestling (UPW), a former World Wrestling Entertainment developmental company. Cena seized the opportunity and started competing as the character Prototype with the tagline "half machine, half mayhem!"
Coming back full circle to wrestling also brought Cena Jr. back full circle to his dad. The older Cena even began working as a ring announcer.
"My dad couldn't have been prouder if I were the CEO of Microsoft," Cena Jr. says.
And John Cena Sr. couldn't have asked for a better gift: he was no longer watching from the nosebleed seats; he was apart of the action.
But the second gift John Cena Jr. gave to his father was the hard one.
It started when Cena Sr. was almost 70, during a visit to his son's new Florida home. "He couldn't finish the tour. Dad had to stop and catch his breath," Cena Jr. says.
Cena Sr. had let his weight get out of control, ballooning up to 310 pounds and settling around 285. "The doctors told me if I had a heart attack now, there's nothing they could do," remembers Cena Sr.
Junior knew his dad had to make a change, and that it would not be easy for him. He sat down his father and had one of the hardest conversations a child can have with a parent -- a frank talk about health and weight. This was a wakeup call for Cena Sr., and Junior was determined not to let him off the hook.
"My dad thinks he's invincible, thinks he'll live forever. But he's like most people: give him an excuse 00 the weather's bad or I'm going to this or that party -- and some fancy diet program just isn't gonna happen," Cena Jr. says.
With the help of sports scientists and nutritionists, Junior worked to design a health plan that would work for his dad, a man who liked to eat and was set in his ways, and then helped to ensure his dad followed through.
"Basically, the program is eat healthy for six days a week, eat whatever you want that last day. On the third week, we add two, 20-minute workouts," Cena Jr. says.
At the end of the program, which Cena Jr. calls 10 Week BodyChange, Cena Sr. had dropped 50 pounds. "My blood pressure was out of sight," Cena Sr. says, "and now it's down to 110/70. I'm 70 years old, and people say I look 52."
There are a lot of topics we try not to think about -- our parents' aging and health is one of them. As I thought about gifts for my own father this father's day, I was struck by their story and the bravery it took for John Cena Jr. to have this conversation with his Dad. Sometimes the most meaningful gifts we can give someone are a supportive but real conversation about a difficult topic.
After talking to John Cena and his Dad, I can't think of a more powerful thing to do for our dads this Father's Day than to check in on their health, give them some loving support and, like John Cena Jr., maybe a metaphorical kick in the hindquarters if needed.
Is there any better gift than to see our fathers around for many years to come?
Not for John Cena Sr. He says, "I want to stick around a while, remember those days, the boys wrestling in the basement. I want to remember those days with my kids, to laugh and just enjoy life."

Backstage TV Note On John Cena's injury:

WWE camera crews were told to shoot far away with no close-up shots when they had to shoot John Cena during last night's RAW. This is because of Cena's eye, which was still swollen on Monday but not nearly as bad as it was on Sunday. This isn't the first time Cena has had a facial injury and WWE went out of their way to keep it off TV.

Raw Results ( June 9 2014):

John Cena and The Shield Def. The Wyatt Family

Maybe the Cenation and The Hounds of Justice should have joined forces sooner. Despite the stiff resistance The Wyatts met from the impromptu team of their most recent enemies, the unlikely allies proved every bit as dominant as the original-recipe Shield had been not two weeks ago.

Dean Ambrose shouldered the majority of the load early on, starting against Erick Rowan but throwing punches at Luke Harper and Bray Wyatt as well. The Eater of Worlds and his brood wisely let The Lunatic Fringe punch himself out and held strong once Cena finally entered the fray. Bray Wyatt, no longer the shepherd in the valley of darkness but rather “reborn” as a destroyer, all but feasted on the Cenation leader, but it was Roman Reigns – as ever – who proved to be the equalizer when he cut Luke Harper down with a massive Spear. If the victory served as a warning to Seth Rollins, it’s safe to say The Architect – observing on a monitor with Triple H backstage– got the message loud and clear.

Raw Results ( June 9 2014):

Seth Rollins Broke His Silence

Well, enough about the poor Mr. Ambrose and Mr. Reigns, onto the rich and prosperous Mr. Rollins. Breaking his silence with a sit-down interview alongside Michael Cole, the Hounds of Justice’s resident turncoat did just that. With a demeanor as snug as the black-on-black suit that he wore to the ring, Rollins defended his right to destroy his own creation and denounced the “lunatic” Ambrose and “golden boy” Reigns as inferior competitors who rode his coattails to success.

Rollins also revealed he subscribed wholeheartedly to Triple H’s “evolve or perish” philosophy, and hadn’t so much sold out as bought into a better opportunity than the “business relationship” he’d had with The Shield. Having said his words, Rollins then dared The Shield to make good on their earlier promise to make him eat them, but The Aerialist took flight when the timely arrival of The Wyatts provided him cover for a quick escape. It took none other than John Cena to even the odds and send The Wyatts scurrying, which led to the upside: Looks like The Shield found themselves a partner.

Update On John Cena's Injury:

John Cena and The Usos teamed up and fought The Wyatt family in Rochester. John Cena did not wrestle at all until the last 30 seconds of the match when the Usos cleared out Luke Harper and Erick Rowan, leaving just Cena and Bray Wyatt in the ring. Cena did a couple shoulder tackles, a 5 knuckle shuffle and finished with the AA for the win. His eye was visibly swollen shut and he acted mainly as a cheerleader for the Usos.

John Cena defeated Bray Wyatt in a No Holds Barred Match.

John Cena injured at a live event in Madison:

At the start of the main event for the show, John Cena suffered a pretty severe blow to the head during his No Holds Barred match with Bray Wyatt. The referee threw up the "X" symbol and two trainers came out to check on him. This went on for several minutes. Cena basically worked the rest of the match - which was said to be very physical and involved a lot of foreign objects - with one good eye. After the match he headed straight to the back, without giving the usual "thanks for coming" talk to the live crowd, and celebrating with them.

What Happened after Raw Went Off Air? (2 June 2014)

Cena came out, and then out was Bray Wyatt, who was wearing Mankind-like sweat pants. Cena was teasing Bray and then Bray hinted at a match before calling himself a god and turning down the match. This then turned into a sing-a-long with Bray singing "He's Got The Whole World In His Hands," and Cena sang, "You got no pearls in your pants!"

Bray finally faked a rush and the bell sounded. Bray was outside of the ring and waited until the 8 count before getting in the ring and the match was on. The end of the match saw Bray and Cena both kicked out of each other's finishers. The referee got knocked down and Cena locked in the STF. The Wyatt Family rushed the ring and beat down Cena. They went to hit Cena with a kendo stick, but Cena ducked and hit an AA on Bray to get the win.

Raw Results (2 June 2014):

John Cena interrupted Stephanie McMahon

Payback truly was a you-know-what for Stephanie McMahon at Payback; Brie Bella turned the tables on WWE's principal owner by taking control of Stephanie’s impossible ultimatum to Daniel Bryan – rather than allow Bryan to choose between the title and Brie losing her job, the Bella Twin quit and slapped Stephanie square across the face. The boss lady was, of course, not amused by any of this, and issued a final ultimatum to Bryan as a result: He must defend the title against Kane in a stretcher match at Money In The Bank, or the title would be stripped and put up for grabs in the Money in the Bank Match.

The victorious John Cena chose this time to make his presence known, and floated the idea that perhaps Stephanie's vendetta that has clouded her judgment and compromised her ability to run WWE (what he actually said was, "you suck"). Unfortunately for Cena, regardless of any impromptu evaluations, Stephanie does have one card up her sleeve at all times: Kane himself, who emerged from the fire at her command to face the Cenation leader one-on-one.

John Cena def Kane Via Disqualifcation

And he didn’t even have to embrace the hate to do it. Granted, John Cena was already in touch with his darker side after a months-long psychological war with Bray Wyatt, so facing off against his masked tormentor of yesteryear was right in the Cenation’s current wheelhouse. Alas, Cena’s Last Man Standing clash with Wyatt also left him too weak to finish Kane off when the opportunity was ripe, and The Devil’s Favorite Demon had no qualms with sacrificing a DQ loss for the sake of beating Cena within an inch of unconsicousness. Cena got away in one piece by hauling the steel steps into the demon’s face, but the escape was a narrow one at best. Next time he might not be so lucky.

WWE Payback 2014 Result

John Cena Def. Bray Wyatt in a Last Man Standing Match

CHICAGO — At WWE Payback, the intensely personal rivalry between John Cena and Bray Wyatt wasn’t decided by eerie sing-alongs or metaphor-laden diatribes. Rather, it was the Cenation leader’s unequaled resilience that proved to be the definitive salvo in this months-long battle for the very soul of the WWE Universe.

After Cena silenced the eerie orator at WrestleMania 30, “The Man of 1,000 Truths” was undeterred in his quest to transform Cena — one of the most charismatic and indomitable WWE Superstars in history — into a monster. That mission brought both of these warriors to a savage Steel Cage Match at Extreme Rules, where Wyatt’s apparent sway over the Cenation’s youngest and most passionate members helped the backwoods preacher capture a tainted victory over the 14-time World Champion, tying them at one win apiece.

As Wyatt continued to prey on the conscience of the WWE Universe, proclaiming himself a god and leading his legions of mystified followers in creepy choruses of “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands,” Cena agreed to his silver-tongued nemesis’ challenge to meet at WWE Payback in a Last Man Standing Match. Such a bout can only be won by incapacitating one’s opponent to the point at which he cannot rise to his feet at the referee’s count of 10.

Before the high-stakes encounter began, the self-professed “necessary evil” seemed to have an early advantage, with the hulking Luke Harper and Erick Rowan essentially turning the bout into a 3-on-1 Handicap Match. Fortunately, Cena had backup in the form of Jimmy & Jey Uso, who stormed the ring and neutralized Bray’s family members.

While the WWE Tag Team Champions kept Rowan & Harper in check outside the ring, Cena nevertheless found himself in for a psychologically draining battle between the ropes, with Wyatt twice avoiding the Attitude Adjustment and hitting Sister Abigail on the Cenation leader. As the Chicago crowd grew more raucous, Wyatt introduced a steel chair to the bout, repeatedly battering the Cenation leader with the metal implement before Cena got hold of it and eked out some retribution against the backwoods preacher. Showing the same ingenuity that earned him a Windy City Victory over Brock Lesnar at Extreme Rules 2012, Cena searched under the ring for a table in a move that whipped the Allstate Arena crowd into a frenzy.

Cena’s plan to drive Wyatt through the hardwood backfired, however, when Wyatt avoided an Attitude Adjustment and slammed Cena through the table instead. Wyatt then capitalized by further punishing Cena with the steel steps which, moments later, served as a podium for the macabre maestro as he conducted legions of singing WWE Universe members who have chosen to “follow the buzzards.”

The weary Cena gained some necessary momentum, however, when he hurled those steel steps over the top rope and onto Wyatt. Although that phenomenal feat of strength would have left most competitors down for the count, Wyatt somehow got back to his feet. In the ensuing brawl, Cena hit Wyatt with another Attitude Adjustment onto the floor, but it was Rowan & Harper that would help The Eater of Worlds to his feet. This interruption led to more chaos as The Usos squared off with Wyatt’s imposing family members — bedlam that at one point distracted the official from noticing that Bray had fallen to the ground for a potential 10-count. As the dueling duos nullified one another with a pair of massive table collisions, the bout became a true one-on-one affair once more.

After Wyatt sent both himself and the Cenation leader crashing through the ringside barrier, these bitter rivals fought out into the crowd and up the entrance ramp, firing off pyrotechnics in their wake as they clashed in the tech area. In the end, Cena hit Wyatt with an Attitude Adjustment that sent “The Man of 1,000 Truths” crashing through an equipment case. Then, in a show of incredible power, Cena pushed another massive case onto the destroyed case where Wyatt lay prone, entombing The Eater of Worlds for a 10-count and arguably giving Cena one of the hardest fought victories in his career.

Has Cena saved the WWE Universe from the seemingly irresistible lure of Bray Wyatt, or will The Eater of Worlds re-emerge more diabolical than ever? For now, at least, Cena has proven that the whole world isn't in Wyatt’s hands. And perhaps that’s the greatest victory of all.

What Happened After Payback Went Off Air?

John Cena noted during the post-Payback press conference that Bray Wyatt has a bright future and is a future champion. He did say that he was the better man tonight and Wyatt "earned his defeat." He went on to say that he believes that himself and Wyatt will cross paths again in the future.
